The Journey Home (1977)

CoverIn Abbey's own words, this is "a defense of the American West", and an impassioned one. As collection of articles and short stories this is a very good book, almost as good as Desert Solitaire.

Cover text

The Journey Home is Abbey's first important nonfiction book since Desert Solitaire (an underground bestseller, actively alive today, a decade after its first publication). His new book is alive with ranchers, dam builders, kissing bugs and mountain lions. In a voice edged with inner chagrin, he offers a portrait of the American West what we'll not soon forget, offering us the observations of a man who left the urban world behind to think about the natural world and the myths buried therein.

Reviews

"Edward Abbey is one of our foremost Western essayist and novelists. A militant conservationist, he has attracted a large following -- not only within the ranks of Sierra Club enthusiasts and dedicated backpackers, but also among armchair appreciators of good writing. What always made his work doubly interesting is the sense of a true maverick spirit at large, within it -- a kind of spirit not imitable, limited only to the highest class of literary outlaws." -- The Denver Post
